Sirmione is a resort town on the southern bank of Lake Garda and one of the most popular on the lake. Setting is the tip of a picturesque peninsula rich in history. The Archaeological Site of Grotte di Catullo encompasses a Roman villa, a museum and olive trees and the castle at the entrance to the old town. Continue to Verona. Depart from your Milan hotel and ride in comfort as you drive through the scenic Autostrada. Travel a just under two hours and you reach Sirmione. Learn about the interesting history of this ancient city on a guided walking tour through its picturesque streets, followed by free time for lunch (not included in the price).
Then you will visit on your own a charming Roman villa and the Caves of Catulo (Grotte di Catullo), the main point of interest of Sirmione. It is believed that, in these caves, overlooking the lake, lived the famous Latin poet Catulo. Visit Scaliger Castle, a rare example of medieval port fortification used by the nobles of Verona in the 13th century.
Departure to Verona. Once gathered in the Plaza Bra, we will visit the famous Arena. This gigantic Roman amphitheater from 20 centuries ago is the jewel of the city. Although it is no longer used for gladiatorial fights, you can enjoy other more civilized performances such as summer concerts or the opera festival.
We will stop at the city walls and cross the bridge over the Adige to reach the castle or Castelvecchio. Its Romanesque architecture will transport you to a period film where you are the figurants. The tour continues through the Roman gate, Porta dei Borsari, Plaza delle Erbe and Plaza dei Signori.
We could not finish the tour without approaching Juliet’s house. You can contemplate with your own eyes the balcony that so inspired Shakespeare and even send a letter to Juliet. Tempting right? Return to Milan.
